Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, is a well-known figure in the Christmas stories. Because his nose is capable of burning bright red, Rudolph is believed to pull the sled.
In a paper, professor of anthropology from Dartmouth University, Nathaniel J. Dominy, explained the important role of Rudolph’s nose. “It has something to do with the Arctic fog which is able to disguise ultraviolet light,” he said as quoted by Phys, Tuesday, December 22, 2015.
Rudolph does have sharp eyes that are able to see ultraviolet rays – abilities that other mammals and humans do not have. This ability is very beneficial to them, especially in winter when the sun hangs low on the horizon and the light scattered from the atmosphere is average blue or ultraviolet.
Their eye reflex fibers also change from golden during the summer to dark blue during this winter. The layer that also makes the animal’s eyes glow at night helps see in the dark. Blue is very helpful in capturing similar colored light.
