World Women’s Day is celebrated once every year on March 8. Commemoration of World Women’s Day is a form of celebration of women’s achievements in various fields of social, economic, cultural and political. The presence of World Women’s Day resonated since the early 1900s. In 1908, women spoke of oppression and inequality in many areas of life. In the same year, around 15 thousand women in New York City in the United States demanded shorter work hours, wage rights and better voting rights for women. Then in 1910, an International Conference on Working Women was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. At the conference, Clara Zetkin of the German Social Democratic Party put forward the idea of World Women’s Day.
He suggested every year in each country there should be a commemoration day to campaign for women’s voices. Some of the women who took part in the conference agreed with Zetkin’s suggestion. Based on the agreement in Copenhagen, several countries in 1911 celebrated World Women’s Day namely in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19. More than a million women took to the streets to campaign for women’s rights. Starting from the right of women to work, choose, get training, work in public offices and end discrimination.
