The Dragons are legendary creatures in the form of giant reptiles that appear in various cultures in the world. The two most famous dragon culture traditions are the European dragon and the Chinese dragon. The European dragon originated from European folk traditions, and eventually became associated with the Balkans (historical and geographical names used to describe southeastern Europe) and Western Asian mythology.
European dragons are mostly described as reptilian creatures with animal-level intelligence, and have four legs and a pair of separate wings. Chinese dragons are mostly described as snake-like creatures with above-average intelligence, four-legged but without wings. The two traditions may have evolved separately, but they have influenced each other to some extent, especially with cross-cultural contact in the last few centuries.
The word dragon entered English in the early 13th century from the ancient French dragon, which came from the Latin draconem (Draco) which means “big snake, dragon”, and from the Greek, drakon (drakontos) means “snake, sea fish giant”. The Greek and Latin terms refer to any large snake, it doesn’t have to be mythological, and this usage also prevailed in English until the 18th century. A dragon is a mythological representation of a reptile.
In ancient times, most dragons were considered snakes. However, since the Middle Ages, it has become common to describe dragons with legs, resembling a lizard. Dragons in modern times are usually displayed with bodies like large lizards, or snakes with two pairs of lizard-type legs, and are able to draw fire from their mouths. European dragons have bat-like wings that grow on their backs. A creature resembling a dragon with wings but only has a pair of legs, known as a wyvern.
