Yamato-e Japanese Painting
Throughout the period under the influence of Chinese and Western cultures, Japanese paintings have shaped its own style of painting. This unique style remains faithful to its aesthetic characteristics, yet at the same time also adapt in reflecting the values of each era.
Apart from the painting technique itself, The Chinese characters and Buddhism were introduced from China to Japan, due to the interaction between the two countries since ancient times. The concept of Japanese painting, as it is known today, began in the 19th century to distinguish itself from Western paintings, when new techniques from Europe entered the island nation.
Typical Features of Japanese Painting
Compared to European paintings that have “depth” and “stereoscopic” effects, Japanese paintings have less in terms of “shading”, and are centered on flatness and painted with distinctive lines. Paint materials are made of color pigments mixed with glue, and Japanese paintings are usually drawn on silk cloth, hemp paper, or Japanese paper called “washi.” They are often decorated with things other than paint and ink, like gold leaf.
Yamato-e: Japanese image
“Yamato-e” describes images originally painted with different Japanese themes with influences from Chinese – “Yamato-e” literally means “Japanese image”. Typically, this painting comes in the form of a scroll that tells a certain story. Eventually Yamato-e shifted from a mere theme, into a style not only popular among the nobles but also among the general public in Japan.
Suiboku-ga: Ink and Water Painting
“Suiboku-ga” is a type of painting that features scenes and figures drawn using ink gradations. This technique has its origins in China and began to affect Japan around the end of the 13th century, where “Suiboku-ga” became very popular. This type of painting is closely related to Buddhism and many of these paintings were drawn by monks to reflect the teachings of Buddhism.
Ukiyo-e: Image of the Floating World
Many of the paintings “ukiyo-e” depict the pattern of life of the general public at the time. There are two types of paintings included in this term: “ukiyo-e” is a mold of painted wooden beams then captured on paper, and “nikuhitsu ukiyo-e” (ukiyo-e hand drawn) is drawn directly On cloth or paper. In the Edo period, paintings such as “yakusha-e” (actor’s prints) depict the “kabuki” actor, and “bijin-ga” (beautiful female image), showing the classical beauty of Japanese women, also growing. “Ukiyo-e” is a popular culture of its time.
The Gait of Modern Painting
Even when using traditional painting materials and techniques, modern Japanese painting remains through a transformation. Examples of this transformation include the use of social issues as the main subject, or by trying to integrate different cultures in a work. However, in contemporary art, the touch of the past can always be found.
